Power lifting sensation Neel Devnarain

BLAIRGOWRIE – Neel Devnarain will compete at the Global Powerlifting championship in Las Vegas this year.

How strong are you? Neel Devnarain (16), a Grade 11 pupil at Delta Park School, and Ferndale resident, explained how powerlifting does not necessarily mean being big, it is how much you train through the pain that makes a person become stronger. “A powerlifter does not share his pain in training nor does he share his victory,” explained Devnarain.

The pupil will compete at the Global Powerlifting Committee (GPC) World Championships in Las Vegas, United States of America, in September. This is after he qualified at the Rhino Powerlifting Championship earlier this year. When asked about his love for powerlifting he replied, “It started off as a hobby but after I got into my first competition, it got serious.”

He added that his father, Isidingo star Jack Devnarain, introduced him to powerlifting and taught him all about it. “I am extremely proud of my son. My father taught me so I just passed it on to Neel. He enjoys it, which is great,” said Jack.

Jack added that Neel had only been training for 18 months and has already been recognised. Juggling school work, going to the gym and training at least three times a week is no problem for Neel as he explained – it’s all about keeping the balance with everything. “My friends just understand that I won’t join other sports so they won’t ask me. It’s a great understanding that we have,” concluded Neel.
