Soccer girls win tournament
VICTORY PARK – Hard work by soccer girls pays off for De La Salle Holy Cross College.
The De La Salle Holy Cross College senior girls’ soccer team won the Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme.
The programme hosts a series of soccer tournaments for primary schools in Joburg. This partnership with Discovery started in 2009 and involves schools that are affiliated to the Joburg Primary Schools Football Association.
The programme kicked off with trials at the Discovery Festival in May, and proceeds went to the Discovery Knockout Cup preliminary rounds in June, leading to the finals in August.
Head coach of the team Pete Fischer said that his players were “the most dedicated and committed girls I have ever seen, and a pleasure to coach. They never miss a training session and I am very proud of their well-deserved win”.
A total of 120 schools participated in the knockout cup, with six age groups from U9 to U14. This year, the De La Salle Holy Cross College senior girls soccer team won the championship on 12 August. They beat Fairsand Primary School in the final, with the score 1– 0.
“We are incredibly proud of our soccer girls and their coaches. For some of them this is the third year in a row that they have been in a team that has won a trophy in this tournament. Their hard work, team spirit and hours of practice have really paid off,” said Debbie Harris, principal of the college.
