Police at Brixton Police Station have opened a case of attempted murder and armed robbery after a metro police officer and a teenager were injured after shots were fired at a car during a robbery.
Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff said the complainant in the matter was leaving one of his shops at the China Mall on 29 March when he was followed by a Mercedes Benz.
“The occupants of the silver-grey Mercedes Benz started shooting at the complainant who was driving a VW Tiguan. The first two shots were fired at the front of the vehicle,” Backhoff said.
Backhoff added that when the Tiguan crashed into a parked vehicle, three more shots were fired from the Mercedes Benz and it was during this time that the JMPD officer was hit in the leg as he was driving by.
“A boy aged 15 years old was also wounded when a passing bullet grazed him in the leg. A box containing 30 cellphones and R30 000 cash was stolen from the VW Tiguan,” she explained.
No arrests have been made at this stage. Backhoff urged residents to come forward with any information they may have pertaining to the case.
“Residents must be careful when carrying large sums of money or valuable goods as criminals are always looking for their next target.” She said that members of the public should rather draw smaller sums of money at a time and ensure that they are not being watched or followed after drawing money.
