Protests errupt after taxi disputes
BRIXTON - People's protest against taxi associations end in theft and damage to property.
Protesters marched the streets of Portland Avenue and Perth Road in Brixton over disputes with local taxi associations.
According to the spokesperson for Brixton Police Station, Jeanette Backhoff, 25 to 30 people participated in the protest and tyres were set alight. Locals were protesting as they did not want to pay money to the taxi association. Two cases have been opened at the Brixton Police Station, one laid by a passenger of theft of R1 000 and another laid by a taxi driver for damage to property as his tyres were slashed.
The Brixton Police intervened and the protest only lasted around 30 minutes. Backhoff confirmed that a sector manager would be meeting with the taxi association to mediate the situation.
