Elizabeth McQurrie, a pupil from the Deutsche Internationale Schule (DSJ) won the Grade 8 section in the prestigious National Francophonie Competition.
The Grade 8 to 10 French pupils at the DSJ were given the opportunity to take part in the competition. The nationwide competition was open to all French pupils right up to masters degree university students. The competition also had various requirements for each of the categories along with varying prizes. Pupils over the ages of eighteen had the opportunity to win a trip to France.
It was organised by the French Embassy in South Africa in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa and Standard Bank Gallery.
The gallery is currently displaying the works of Henri Matisse, the artist who inspired McQurrie.
McQurrie’s winning art piece was inspired by Matisse’s paper cutout technique and she is also hugely motivated by his ideas on art as a whole.
McQurrie concluded, that when she paints green, it doesn’t mean grass, and when she paints blue, it doesn’t mean the sky. “Colour especially, maybe even more than drawing, is a liberation.”
