Pirates walk the plank, as UJ wins 7th straight title
BRAAMFONTEIN – The University of Johannesburg beats Pirates Sports Club to take home the Pirates Grand Challenge.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Pirates Sports Club faced off in a titanic clash in the Pirates Grand Challenge final at Wits University on 13 August. UJ overcame Pirates 42–19, winning the tournament once again.
“We stayed on beat and defended our title for the seventh year in a row,” said UJ rugby head coach, Werner Janse van Rensburg. “Everything was good and we could not be happier, it has been 39 out of 42 games for us and we plan to do better in the future.”
Spectators were enthusiastic throughout the game and showed great support for their teams. The UJ players were so ecstatic, knowing way before the match ended that they had won, and played a cocky game towards the end.
Pirates chairperson Brad Guymer said that he is happy about how his team played throughout the season. “It was the first time making finals since 2002 so it was a success nonetheless for us.” He admitted that a win would have been great, but the team had come a long way and played to the best of its ability on the day. “UJ had a strong team and well done to them,” he said.
