Captain Spencer reports for duty

LINDEN – Linden Police's new spokesperson Walter Spencer gets promoted from Warrant Officer to Captain.

Former Sector 1 Warrant Officer Walter Spencer has been promoted to the rank of Captain and is now the spokesperson of the Linden Police Station.

Captain Spencer, who has been a policeman at the Linden Police for 28 years, said that he is looking forward to his new position.

“Communications is not new to me as I did a little of it when I was sector commander. I am familiar with it, but it is more diplomatic and I have to watch everything that I say to the media,” he said.

He added that he is getting the training by working with the media on a daily basis and he is happy for the freedom to work in different sectors.

He said that policemen forget operational policing when they get into management but he would like to be capable in both departments.

Captain Spencer said that he is looking forward to doing more social crime prevention projects with schools and the community.

“I would like to talk to school pupils more and bring them in groups to come to the police station, see the cells and learn, that is one of the things I will be working toward with the school’s help,” he said.

He said that going from burning a lot of energy as sector commander to managing, has been an interesting but enjoyable change. “The shift has been easy,” he said. He admitted that he has different views and approaches when it comes to policing and he is adapting.

Captain Spencer said what he is looking forward to most about his promotion, is that he now has been given an opportunity to motivate the public, make them more knowledgeable and bring more unity and equality among the police. “I believe in leading by example, the crime is high but there are more people that do good in the community than bad,” he said.

Captain Spencer who has been a policeman his whole life, is a father of two and a husband. He was born in Upington and initially wanted to join the narcotics department. He said before he was a policeman, he aspired to be in the army because he used to see pictures of his late father who was in the second world war.

When he is not being a policeman, Captain Spencer said that he enjoys going to the gym and reading science, philosophy and biographies.
