Children celebrate South Africa

FAIRLAND – Pinnochio Nursery School children show just how patriotic they are to their beloved country.

Children of Pinnochio Nursery School celebrated South Africa in a unique way recently.

For the past 20 years, the school has hosted a South Africa Day with a resounding success.

Principal of the school, Donna Koopmans said that this a long running tradition that has never lost its importance. She explained that they have this special day every year to celebrate our beautiful country. “We also encourage the children to be patriotic and develop a love for our South African traditions,” she said.

She added that patriotism can sometimes be left on the backburner as people seem to concentrate too much on the negative. “Through this day we can instill the love of our country to the children,” said Koopmans.

To prepare for the day, weeks leading up to the occasion, children would get taught on all things South Africa from the languages, to culture to the currency used.

“Along with teaching them about our country we also teach about the continent too so that they get a better understanding of the world,” said Koopmans.

On the day the children came to dazzle in their best South African attire. “They came either in their the favourite patriotic sports shirts or in their traditional attire.”

There were food stalls to satisfy eager appetites and sounds of vuvuzelas were heard as they pulsated through the school.
