Help just a call away

PARKTOWN–Childline offers various services for children and families in need.

Childline is a community-based organisation that was established in 1987 and initially only dealt with children who are abused.

Today the organisation has expanded and offers other assistance through their crises line and online counselling, and also assists vulnerable orphans and children.

Childline Gauteng director Lynne Cawood said that Childline has a 24/7 helpline and has social workers, psychologists, auxiliary workers and trained individuals who assist children who need help. The organisation also has a foster care programme through their sister home called Sunlight Safe House.

“My highlight this year is the orphaned or abused children who have grown and some of them into adults. Just seeing them progress, they have all made me proud. One of the girls is studying pharmaceutical training and another child has started her own NGO. They have all progressed in their own way and grown into great members in society,” said Cawood.

She added that she finds it alarming that there has been a rise this year in the number of young women getting into consensual relationships with older men as a means to support themselves and their families financially.

Childline’s wish list is the following:

  • Non-perishable items foods
  • Play therapy equipment
  • Toiletries
  • Stationery
  • Fresh produce
  • Clothing
  • Cleaning materials.
