#JoburgStorm: Rain means delays for construction workers
WESTDENE – 'Whenever it rains we can't do much' – construction worker.
Downpours in Johannesburg not only caused some damage but also slowed down work in the city.
Over and above the seasonal Johannesburg summer rain, the heavy rain and hail of 9 October, meant slight delays for construction workers.
Northcliff Melville Times spoke to two construction workers who are currently working on the Westdene and Sophiatown sidewalk project.

Small stones from the construction site found their way into the streets and pools of water began to form where construction workers dug to ready the ground for sidewalks during the heavy rains and hail.

The two men, Nkosinathi Dube and Justice Maduba, used a spade to get rid of water pooled up in dug-up sidewalks.
Concrete curb slabs were already put down to prepare for sidewalk bricks to be laid down.
Nkosinathi said the rains meant that water needed to be drained from certain areas which were being prepared for sidewalks. He then said the ground needs to dry in order for them to begin the bricklaying process.
“Whenever it rains we can’t do much. We’ll have to leave it for a while before we can start again but sometimes if it’s not too bad we can go on,” Nkosinathi said.
He explained that it slows the process for them and when the sun shines again, they have to work faster.
Nkosinathi said that construction in Johannesburg is much better in winter because it rains significantly less than it does in summer.
