‘No serious crime concerns in Melville’

MELVILLE – Various community initiatives could be the reason behind a decreasing crime rate.

Theft from restaurant tables is a problem everywhere where sidewalk cafes are found, but according to Ward 87 councillor Bridget Steer, crime in the trendy suburb of Melville has decreased.

Steer maintains that although this type of crime happens often, Melville is not the only area that is targeted.

“It happens in areas like Melville, Greenside and Parktown North. Residents must just be vigilant,” she said.

Steer said that as far as she was aware, there have been fewer crime reports recently.

“I think because everyone is part of community WhatsApp groups, people are more aware of incidents. The information spreads quickly.”

The councillor believes various community safety initiatives could also be the reason behind a decreasing crime rate.

“Security has been improved. And because of the fibre infrastructure, cameras have been installed.”

However, residents should still remain on the lookout for dark areas, illegal dumping and illegal hoarding, which all provide hiding spots for criminals.

“Always keep on reporting street lights that are not working. Report illegal dumping and hoarding to the JMPD.”

Residents are encouraged to send their illegal dumping tip-offs to deputy director Zed Mangaliso by sending a WhatsApp or SMS to 082 779 1361. All tip-offs remain anonymous.
