There seems to be something special about going to Northcliff High School as the school has produced celebrities, sports stars and, most recently, a Mrs South Africa.
Mrs South Africa 2018, Nicole Capper (32), is an alumnus who was known by her maiden name, Bray. She was part of the class of 2002.
She was voted Mrs SA on 19 November, which had Northcliff High School over the moon about the news.
The Northcliff Melville Times spoke to the physical science teacher, Tracy Fairless, who started teaching at the school the year before Capper matriculated.
Fairless shared her memories of Capper and described her as being a normal student who didn’t particularly stand out.
“She was pretty much an above average student, but that was it. She did things every other student did, but I think that’s what’s incredible about her – that she was a normal student and went on to do something so great.”
Fairless explained that it’s important for students to understand that even if they were not particularly exceptional at high school, they can still accomplish great things afterwards.
Although Fairless said Capper was a normal student, she did well in her academics and made it as one of the school’s councillors, which is the equivalent of a perfect.
Capper received The Butchard Trophy for scientific excellence in project work and left the school as one of their leaders. She also tried her hand at sport and took up hockey at school.
Fairless said Capper was also involved in charity and social justice work early on and was part of the NHS Interact Club.
“Nicole is very down-to-earth. She’s a real person, if you know what I mean? I think she’s going to make a great Mrs South Africa,” Fairless said. She concluded by saying that, unlike many other celebrities, Capper will stay grounded as she has always been and will never forget where she came from.
