The University of Johannesburg has paid tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
The university’s media relation officer Herman Esterhuizen said Madikizela-Mandela was a life-long servant of the people.
Her contribution to South African and cultural life captured the imagination of the world, he added.
As a political stalwart, her activism and resistance demonstrated her commitment to the struggle against inequalities, unemployment and poverty.
“The well-being of all of the people of this country is a reflection of her life’s work to the struggle for liberation and has kept the embers of resistance alive and she has lived through and witnessed the major events that shaped South Africa, Africa and the world,” said Esterhuizen.
He added that it was the people’s responsibility to take off where she had left off and continue to transform our society. Her superb dedication and resolve will eternally be etched in their memory.
Meanwhile, Wits University extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Madikizela-Mandela, who passed away in Johannesburg at the age of 81 on 2 April after a long illness.
The university’s senior communications officer Buhle Zuma said the political activist did not hesitate to speak her mind and sacrifice her personal freedoms. She fought tirelessly in her quest for the freedom and liberation of South Africans from apartheid.
“Mama Madikizela-Mandela was an alumnus of the University of the Witwatersrand and the flag above the Wits Great Hall will fly at half-mast in honour of her memory on Tuesday, 3 April 2018.
Various Wits constituencies will host events in memory of Mama Madikizela-Mandela in the coming days,” said Zuma.
