EFF, Roosevelt Park High School, disciplinary hearings and allegations of racism

ROOSEVELT PARK – The school will not release details of the hearing at this stage.

EFF turns up to defend a learner involved in a disciplinary hearing.

Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters arrived at Roosevelt Park High School (RHS) on the morning of 15 September in what they say was to represent a learner going through a hearing. The members refused to speak to the Northcliff Melville Times but we can report their attendance at the school was in relation to allegations of racism taking place. Although peaceful and rational in their demands and requests, Parkview police and SCP Security were on standby at the school. The members did warn the police and SCP Security that if the matter isn’t resolved in a fair manner they will return. Parkview Police Station Spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko expressed, “It has been reported that four EFF members demanded to speak to the school principal as the school was holding a disciplinary hearing for one of the learners. Matter was resolved upon the arrival of SAPS and the EFF members left the school.”

RHS released a statement on the allegations of racism facing them. It read, “It has come to the attention of the School Governing Body that there have been several allegations relating to racism at Roosevelt High School against the principal and the teachers of RHS.” According to the school, an investigation into the allegations is currently under way with the assistance of the Department of Education. RHS affirmed that all processes will be followed to ensure the rights of all staff and students will be protected under all circumstances.

In relation to the learner going through the disciplinary hearing, RHS could not address the details of the matter. The school stated, “In order to protect the rights of the student to a fair hearing, we cannot address the merits of the aforesaid at this stage, however, should it become so necessary, we shall deal with same upon conclusion of the hearing, which is to be held at a future date and in terms of the proper procedure.” RHS committed itself to strive to act in the best interest of their learners and staff members in order to ensure a neutral and safe environment for them to focus on education and achieving excellence.

This is a developing story. An update will be made once more information has become available.
