Melville Koppies safety and security in the spotlight

MELVILLE – Avoid being in areas of a limited line of sight such as thick bushes and shrubs, stick to paths that are open and preferably well used when using the Koppies.

Sophiatown police have called on members of the public using the Melville Koppies to do so with caution.

This comes after the police station recently recorded reports of common robbery taking place along the scenic path enjoyed by many. Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said, “We recently received reports of people being robbed on the Koppies and, although our information doesn’t suggest there has been a surge or increase in recent times, we don’t want to see that happening so we are warning the public.

“In addition to accessing the Koppies at peak times and with a group of people to maximise their safety, we also urged people to not carry valuables items with them when they visit the Koppies.”

Police have also told those that are shooting at birds, other animals and/or people using pellet guns at the Melville Koppies to refrain from doing so as it is illegal. “Although one doesn’t need a permit of sorts to own one [a pellet gun], people cannot shoot with them in a public space – at animals or at other people. It could result in very serious injuries and that is what we are hoping to avoid.”

Jozi Trails offered the public the following safety tips which are applicable for the Melville Koppies and other open outdoor public spaces:

  •  Be extra vigilant during the high-risk times between 4.30am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm. These times provide opportunities for criminals to take advantage of low light conditions to target the many users of the parks.
  • Be aware of people and vehicles in the close vicinity – situational awareness is your greatest defence tool.
  • Try to exercise or use the parks in groups, there’s safety in numbers. Look after each and every group member and do not let people fall behind.
  • Don’t use headphones, they reduce your awareness of what’s going on around you and make you vulnerable. Don’t display valuable items such as phones, cameras, keep them hidden.
  • Avoid being in areas of a limited line of sight such as thick bushes and shrubs, stick to paths that are open and preferably well used.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
