77 commuters injured in bus crash outside UJ

The patients were transported to various hospitals for further care.

Emer-G-Med responded to a collision involving two buses on Kingsway Road near the entrance to the University of Johannesburg on July 25 at around 08:00.

On arrival on scene two busses were found to have collided. One was found to have overturned and lay on its side occupying the width of the roadway.

The second had collided with a concrete structure.

“A total of 77 patients were found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. An on-scene triage area was established by incident commanders and additional resources were dispatched by the Emer-G-Med Emergency Operations Centre,” confirmed Kyle van Reenen, national spokesperson for Emer-G-Med.

“With the assistance of the Johannesburg Fire Department, several patients were extricated using specialized hydraulic equipment including the Jaws-of-life.

On-scene paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the injured before they were transported by ambulances to nearby hospitals for further medical care.”
