This greenkeeper plays for keeps

Greenkeeper, Morgan Muvhango tells how tasks he takes on on the greens get his effortless precision.

Growing up, Morgan Muvhango was an avid football player, with his footwork being key. Then, in his later years, he would be introduced to lawn bowls, a sport he grew to love, using less footwork yet gaining national colours.

He didn’t initially take to the idea of bowls as he thought it was an old man’s sport, but it’s been 18 years and he can still be found intently rolling around a bowling ball, that, and as he aptly put it, he too is now ‘an old man.’

It was back in 2014 when, following his participation and win at a national singles competition hosted in Cape Town, he became a Springbok. In his opinion, to become a bowls Springbok all you need to do is perform.

On this particular day, he was at the Greenkeepers Tournament held at Linden Bowling Club. Though confident in his ability, he swayed against the arrogance of thoughts he had the competition in the bag. He explained that bowls need one to be humbly confident, taking it all one match at a time. “If I come out on top, I’ll be happy, but if I don’t, I’ll be fine with that too.”

He has been a greenkeeper for the past 20 years, working at various bowling clubs, and has been at Discovery Bowling Club for some years now. Being part of that club, be it through playing on the greens or looking after it, has gone on to change not only his life but his family’s life too.

He encourages the community, no matter your age, to play and be part of the sport as it is one for enjoyment.
