A lifetime fascination of words with Brenda Afargon

The local scrabble enthusiast shares her love for the game of scrabble.

Imagine learning a lifetime of words through the simple act of playing a much-loved game? This is the case for Brenda Afargon, who has been playing, and continues to play scrabble.

As a little girl, her days included sitting around the table with her family to play the word game together. Now, years later, with the same deep love for it, you can find her at Roosevelt Park Recreational Centre where she is part of the Rosepark Scrabble Club, a club she has been part of for the past 15 years and even led for some years.

Through the years, Afargon has been part of many competitions – in some she has even taken top prizes while in others she faced the humility that comes with the acceptance of a loss. “I do not go to win; I go to enjoy myself. I love the game and I only get very upset if I don’t play at least once a week.”

Her appreciation for the game is so firm, that she even started a small club at her retirement village and spends her time playing any chance she gets.

Growing up, Afargon did not have many friends but her time playing scrabble has made up for all of that as she says, “This is really cool for me to now have a huge group of friends.”
Having only moved to her retirement home in recent years, she now also has a big sense of life as now she can fill her time taking part in a great many activities.

In her opinion, the game of scrabble is for people of any age and as such, she encourages everyone to at least give it a go.
