Devastating fire causes extensive damage to Country Club Johannesburg

The iconic Country Club Johannesburg, a beloved landmark steeped in over a century of history, was engulfed in flames on the evening of September 10th, 2024.

The iconic Country Club Johannesburg (CCJ), a landmark steeped in more than a century of history, was engulfed in flames on the evening of September 10.
The fire caused extensive damage to the clubhouse, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

To combat the fire, Joburg Fire EMS, Fidelity ADT, Fire Ops and SCP Security Private Fire Search and Rescue worked together to battle the blaze.

According to Clive Maher from SCP Security Private Fire Search and Rescue, the scene was chaotic upon their arrival, with everyone running around trying to salvage what they could from the building.

He said most of the staff had already exited the premises. “The flames were already three to four metres above the roof, and the situation was extremely dangerous for the firefighters and emergency services.
“It was a race against the clock, a race against time,” Maher added.
“Getting the fire engine there, linking up the fire hose to the fire hydrant, and then rolling out the lines into the building was a critical step. The firefighters were running four lines from our engine into the building, supplying water at a rapid pace.”

They coordinated their efforts, with some teams working on one side of the building and others on the other side, effectively fighting the fire from both directions, according to Maher.

In a statement released by the general manager of CCJ, Steve Nicholson, he said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
He expressed relief that the kitchen, terrace room, private dining rooms, patio, gym, change rooms, admin block, generator, dormy house, and sports facilities were not damaged by the fire.

“Unfortunately, the reception, foyers, restaurant, and ballroom sustained extensive damage, and smoke and water damage have rendered the clubhouse currently inaccessible.”

He said the management was working closely with the employees to ensure their well-being and offering counselling where needed. “Many employees are actively contributing to the recovery efforts, and the management is deeply grateful for their teamwork and dedication during this challenging period.”

The CCJ community has expressed their sincerest thanks to the local fire department, Fire Ops, and emergency services for their exceptional support in managing the fire. The management has also acknowledged the kindness, patience, and cooperation of the members throughout this process.

“It is not the physical structure that defines the club, but the vibrant community we share,” Nicholson concluded. “We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops and look forward to welcoming you back to the club.”
