Greenside Scouts scout the Cedarberg Senior Scout Adventure

Emmarentia-based 1st Greenside Scout Group took on the Cederberg for a Scouting adventure.

Bright and early on December 12, 11 members of 1st Greenside Scout Group along with two Scouts from 1st Robin Hills embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, the Cederberg Senior Scout Adventure 2024.

They joined more than 250 fellow Scouts from all over the country in an exciting 11 days of exploring, hiking, and learning about the beautiful part of our beloved country.

This event is a highlight of the Scouting calendar. Scouter, Gabriella van Niekerk, said the adventure first started in 1974, making this the 50th anniversary, and occurs every second year (except in exceptional circumstances). “Senior Scouts between the ages of 15 and 18 hike in patrols of nine along with an adult to different bases in the mountains,” she said. The participants do activities such as 4×4, paintball, astronomy, archery, and parasailing to name a few.

Adults who take part are all connected to Scouting in some aspect and everyone has lots of fun in the mountains. Van Niekerk said over the last few adventures, the international involvement has grown with Scouts from the UK, US, Germany, The Czech Republic, and Pakistan in attendance.

“This event is a perfect illustration of what Scouting is. One that would not be possible to pull off without the contributions of time and effort, as two years of planning are done to pull off a once-in-a-lifetime event, and this means that despite a few blisters and some slightly burnt cheeks, the Scouts talk about their adventure for years to come. This makes it a perfect opportunity to not only meet Scouts from all over the country but also the world.”

The 1st Greenside Scout Group enjoy the beauty of the Cederberg.

1st Greenside did things a little differently this year and took their Scouts to Cape Town on December 10 and explored the city. Swimming in the sea, using planes, trains and boats to get around, while enjoying fish and chips, and seeing penguins were all highlights. This trip was a great way for their Scouts to bond and engage with each other.

“Many thanks to all of you who helped with our fundraising in 2024. Attending events such as the Highland Gathering, Blairgowrie fun day, and the white elephant sale at the Irish club. If you have engaged your time and/or money with 1st Greenside over 2024, it has been able to help us provide this life-changing adventure with our Scouts.”
