Linden residents join ARO, PEETS, and SCP Security in Emma Park clean-up

Linden residents, along with African Reclaimers Organisation, University of Johannesburg PEETS, and SCP Security, united to clean Emma Park, in the hopes of beautifying their open spaces.

Residents of Linden came out in strong numbers on April 12 to participate in a community clean-up at Emma Park, an initiative held in collaboration with the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO), University of Johannesburg (UJ) PEETS, Linden Community Association (LCA), and SCP Security.

The clean-up saw volunteers working alongside ARO to clean the park, while also learning about the crucial role reclaimers play in waste separation and environmental sustainability.

Nandi Tutani, of ARO, described the clean-up as a success, highlighting its potential to build lasting partnerships. “It was an amazing turnout and a great opportunity to spread the message about integrating waste reclaimers into the formal waste management system,” she said. “Many reclaimers travel from central Johannesburg to work in areas like Linden, Emmarentia, and Risidale. We hope this collaboration helps us find a site specifically for this area.”

Tutani also noted the impact of ARO’s recent partnership with UJ. “The collaboration has brought in other entities and corporates. Visual arts students have created powerful videos that showcase how reclaimers live and work, and the fashion faculty is now involved in a sewing project tailored for reclaimers,” she said. “These kinds of community engagements are what drive growth and awareness.”

Lucinda Scholtz, head of marketing for the LCA, praised the initiative. “I really appreciated the people who made the early show up time to make a difference. It says a lot about their hearts. The information shared by ARO was incredibly eye-opening. It reminded us just how vital recyclers are in keeping our communities sustainable.”

The event not only left the park cleaner but also fostered a deeper understanding between residents and reclaimers, setting the foundation for future collaboration in building a greener community.
