Acts of service at DLSHCC
The College spent their Mandela Day morning taking part in various projects, all in observance of Mandela Day.
Acts of service were the pulse of the day at De La Salle Holy Cross College on July 18 as they observed Mandela Day.
Marketing assistant at the school, Jenny Myburgh, says in light of their motto, ‘Be first so that you may be of service’, the children signed up to be part of various initiatives held at both the junior and high schools.

They spread joy by making peanut butter and jam sandwiches. They sewed love as some gathered to crochet/knit blankets. They also had initiatives that saw them venture out of the school premises and into the community at large, where they visited a few old-age homes and orphanages.

Myburgh said the learners were excited to get their Mandela Day initiatives started. This, even after spending a few hours writing their June exams. “We had our junior learners finish the exams at 9:30, and they stepped out of the exam and into a project that saw them be of service to others,” she explained.
She sees it as important to foster within the learners the desire and act of being of help to others. “They are not just here to get an education, they are also here to be Good Samaritans once they have left,” she said. Myburgh said it is so important to give back, and they find themselves in a privileged position where they can do so. “So it’s important to build on this life skill of being of service to others from a young age.”
