Handcrafted blankets bring comfort to children from Hotel Hope Ministries

On July 18, Lloyd Warwick, an insurance company, made a heartfelt donation of blankets to the children of Hotel Hope Ministries Montessori Preschool, in honour of Mandela Day.
Le Roux Van Den Berg, managing director, shared the story behind the blankets, explaining that the initiative began a couple of years ago as a hobby. “We started developing these blankets that we knit, and over the years it has grown into something a bit more substantial.”

Van Den Berg highlighted the significance of Mandela Day, stating: “There is a component of Mandela Day which we are tapping into today, but it’s more than that. Most of us are fathers or mothers, and we all have kids around the same age. We felt that children from neglected circumstances do not have anyone else to look up to, or anywhere else to go.”

He emphasised that the crochet project was not just about providing warmth and comfort; it was about creating something beautiful for the children. “It is not a normal blanket; it is something specially made for them, something they can cherish.”
Oliver Quambusch, founder of Hotel Hope Ministries, expressed his appreciation for the donations and the spirit of giving that Mandela Day embodies. “Mandela Day has become a day where organisations and donors can meet the beneficiaries directly, rather than just writing a cheque or making a donation without seeing who truly benefits from it.” Quambusch noted that the opportunity for donors to visit and donate items makes the day even more special. “For me, this is an absolute win-win.”
