Sophiatown resident’s journey of giving back

From starting a soup kitchen to supporting the elderly during a water crisis, Arushaad Adriaanse always believes in helping others and giving back.

Arushaad Adriaanse, a resident of Sophiatown who grew up in Pretoria, has become a prominent figure in his community through his dedication to helping those in need. Raised in a close-knit family that values hospitality, Adriaanse learned early on the importance of giving back. “We believed in cooking too much, because you never knew who is going to knock on the door,” he shared, reflecting on his upbringing.

His commitment to community service intensified during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. As many faced food insecurity, Adriaanse took the initiative to start a soup kitchen from his home, preparing meals every Monday. He also formed a patrolling group with his neighbours to keep their streets clean and secure. “Our goal was to help people,” he explained, noting that their efforts extended beyond Sophiatown, to areas as far as Florida.

Adriaanse’s journey has not been without challenges. As a young man, he faced difficulties at home. “I did not listen to my father, and I ended up on the streets.” It was the support of others during these tough times that inspired him to help those less fortunate. “I am cheeky and a loud mouth, and I speak for people who cannot speak for themselves.”

His philosophy on life is rooted in compassion and understanding. “Nobody is too good to become bad, and nobody is too bad to become good.” Adriaanse believes that everyone faces hardships, and that we all need support at some point in our lives.

In addition to his soup kitchen, Adriaanse initiated a clean-up campaign in response to the challenges posed by gangsterism in his community. He also focuses on supporting the elderly, particularly during the recent water crisis in Johannesburg. “When the water crisis started, Eeufees Oord Old Age Home was my first thought.” His grandmother’s teachings about the importance of caring for seniors have deeply influenced his actions. “How we treat senior citizens today will determine how we will be treated one day.

“This too shall pass. Where we find ourselves on the other side, in the next life, is determined by how we live here on Earth.” Adriaanse’s mission is clear: To always be willing to help the next person, and to uplift others, rather than push them down.
