Fairland Pedestrian bridge gets safety upgrade
The installation of razor wire on the Fairland Pedestrian Bridge marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety of local children.
In a significant step towards enhancing safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) installed razor wire on the Fairland pedestrian bridge on July 22.
This initiative aims to address safety concerns for those using the bridge near Laerskool Fairland.
Some parts of the bridge posed safety risks for schoolchildren and pedestrians who make use of the bridge, with balustrades being stolen.

Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe expressed optimism about the improvements, noting that they were currently in the process of obtaining quotes to appoint a service provider for fixing the balustrades. He emphasised the importance of these safety measures, stating, “The razor wire on the balustrades means that those massive holes are not open, reducing the risk of children falling through and onto the N1 highway.”

While acknowledging that some risk remains, Shawe highlighted that the installation of razor wire significantly lowered the chances of accidents. “It’s a lot safer for the children at the moment.”
Shawe also commended Sanral for their proactive approach, stating, “It is refreshing to see that a national entity takes this seriously. I feel Sanral came to the party without excuses. Yes, it takes a while, but they communicated and made a temporary plan, showing they care.”
