The runner who never stopped chasing the next challenge

Chairman of Run Zone Athletics, Graham Block, who is always motivating the next runner and those around him.

At 41, Graham Block, chairman of Run Zone Athletics, based in Northcliff, has built a reputation not only as a leader in the running community but also as a man who has always been chasing the next challenge by being actively involved and leading club runs for over 20 years.

Block’s background is rooted in mountaineering and rock climbing, pursuits that fed his love for adrenaline and risk. “I’ve always been an extremist by nature,” he said.

What began as simple morning jogs soon transformed into something much greater. A casual run evolved into a time trial. A time trial turned into his first 10km. From there, he leapt to 15km, then a 50km race, and soon after, the Comrades Marathon, Ultra Marathons, Two Oceans, SkyRun 100, 160km runs, and 1 000km challenges.

Now retired for eight years, his running journey was never just about personal glory. “Alongside my personal running journey, I have spent as long as I can remember inspiring and motivating others.”

From leading training groups to encouraging social runners during club sessions, motivating them as well, has come as naturally to him. His vision, he said, is for Run Zone to be known as ‘a club with a limitless outlook, one that stands apart by being different and by doing things differently’.

For Block, running remains more than a sport. It is a way of life, an extension of his appetite for challenge, and a platform to inspire those around him.
