Hoerskool Linden principal shares message of hope and gratitude this Christmas

The school celebrates the festive season through community service, shared meals, and acts of kindness that extend far beyond the classroom.

At Hoërskool Linden, the Christmas season is a time for togetherness, gratitude, and compassion, says principal Dr Johan Wiehahn. The festive period offers the community a chance to slow down, reconnect with what truly matters, and reflect on the values of family, hope, faith, and service. “It reminds us that we are part of a larger family that stretches far beyond our school gates.”

The school celebrates the season by giving back through initiatives such as the Ukunaka Christmas Project, food donations, and small acts of service that touch lives beyond the classroom. Wiehahn notes that the staff and families also find time for rest, shared meals, laughter, and enjoyment of the warm South African summer – moments that allow them to recharge and reconnect.

One tradition that the school looks forward to every year is the joy of giving, particularly seeing the smiles of children who receive gifts through outreach projects. According to Wiehahn: “Witnessing how one thoughtful gesture can brighten someone’s entire season remains one of our greatest Christmas highlights.”

The principal also sends a message of gratitude and hope to the wider community. “We are deeply grateful for a community that stands together through challenges and celebrations alike. May this season bring you peace, restoration, and the reassurance that you belong to a community that truly sees and values you. May hope rise again in your home and in your heart.”

Wiehahn recalls that the most memorable Christmas moments are often unexpected: Anonymous donations, families helping each other, or learners using their own pocket money to give to someone in need. “These moments reflect the true spirit of Christmas and stay with us long after the season ends.”

For the festive season, Hoërskool Linden hopes the community will come together by noticing one another, supporting neighbours, local businesses, and offering small acts of kindness. The principal emphasises that even simple gestures create a powerful ripple effect, strengthening the bonds within the community.

This year, the school has been inspired by the generosity of parents, learners, and staff who give selflessly despite economic challenges. “Their willingness to serve and uplift others is a constant inspiration.”
