Deputy principal Vanessa Phillips, who has been at the school since 2020 and was appointed to her current role in 2023, described the Class of 2025 as a group that set its intentions early. “At the beginning of the year, they made a commitment that they were going to be the group that gives us the 100%.” What stood out for her was their reminder to each other of that commitment throughout the year.

Phillips highlighted that while peer support is part of UJ Academy’s culture, this class took it further. “They really supported each other. When someone wasn’t doing what they needed to do, the others stepped in.”

Although staff could see the learners’ potential, the final results still came as an emotional moment. “When they actually see the result, it’s almost like they can’t believe they achieved it.” She added that the learners remain humble despite their success, often feeling shy about standing out.

Phillips’s message to the class is one of confidence and courage. “You have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that you are capable and skilled. They must take those skills with them into their next chapter, go confidently, and go boldly.”
The results mark a proud moment for the school community and set a high benchmark for future matric classes.
