A prolonged road excavation on Rustenburg Road in Melville, which has become a source of frustration for the community, is expected to be resolved this week.
The excavation remained open for almost a month, prompting concerns about delays, accountability, and infrastructure management in the area.
Operations manager at Melville Security Initiative (MSI) Danny Nunes stated that Johannesburg Water dug up the site to fix a pipe burst, but in doing so, the excavation damaged a fibre cable.

Ward 87 councillor Kyle Jacobs added that pressure had been placed on Johannesburg Water and Johannesburg Roads Agency to ensure the excavation was closed and the road resurfaced.
Head of department for regional operations Khaya Gqibitole responded to a media query on February 18, stating that the delay in reinstating the road was due to the need for Johannesburg Water to complete its repairs before handing the site over.
“The excavation was undertaken by Johannesburg Water for repairs to their infrastructure. They have now completed their work, and we will reinstate the road during this week, before February 20.”
