JRA barricades eroded Hofmeyer Drive shoulder in Emmarentia as stream blockage is investigated

The entity has moved to secure a badly eroded road while plans are finalised to address a nearby stream blockage blamed for diverting water onto the road.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has barricaded a severely eroded section of Hofmeyer Drive in Emmarentia following concerns of the Emmarentia Residents Association and Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker, for the safety of motorists, while plans are finalised to address a blockage in a nearby stream.

The damage is located opposite 9 Hofmeyer Road near the corner of 5th Avenue, where water diverted from the stream eroded the shoulder of the road.

Following assessments along the affected stretch, the agency found that overgrown trees along the stream are obstructing the natural flow of water, which is being diverted the water onto the roadway.

JRA head of department for operations, Khaya Gqibitole, said the area had been secured while the agency prepares to resolve the underlying cause of the damage.

Gqibitole added that the trees obstructing the stream will need to be removed so that water can return to its natural path and prevent further erosion along the road.
