Melville Mile brings the suburb to life with art, culture, and community
Melville’s streets come alive with art, music, and creative energy, welcoming visitors to explore the artsy scenery.
Melville, long celebrated as the city’s Bohemian heartland, is reclaiming its streets with a new monthly cultural circuit: the Melville Mile.
Modeled on global first Thursdays events, the initiative transforms the suburb into a walkable, open-air gallery every first Thursday of the month, said co-ordinator and facilitator for Snaps On Seventh and Melville Mile Aubrey Moloto.

The official 2026 season launched on February 5, following a pilot in December that drew 438 attendees. The Melville Mile brings together art, culture, music, and local businesses in a curated community-led experience designed to energise the suburb’s creative scene.

Moloto noted that the pilot in December was electric and something entirely new. “[In February], more businesses participated and more friendships formed between tours – it was about creating that sense of connection.”
The Melville Mile is co-ordinated by local creative agency Snaps On Seventh, under the governance of the newly formed Melville Art Mile Association (Mama). Key supporters include the Melville Security Initiative, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, RE/MAX Masters, and local favorites, such as Café Picobella Trattoria, Xai Xai Lounge, IKO Afrika, and iheartdesigns.

Moloto explained the rationale behind the initiative. “Melville has this unique combination of residential charm, a thriving business node, and a creative community. We have students, creatives, and filmmakers all around. It felt like like the perfect setting to reinvigorate the first-Thursday tradition of celebrating art, culture, and connection.”

He added that the mile’s primary goal is to cultivate and grow the local arts industry. “We want to support galleries, help artists sell their work, and make the community’s creativity accessible to everyone. It is about shared energy, collaboration, and reclaiming our streets in a safe and vibrant way.”
The mile runs on the very first Thursday of the month, with its next event scheduled for March 4. Whether you are an art lover, a curious visitor, or a local looking to rediscover over your neighbourhood, the mile promises an evening of culture, community, and creativity.
