Sophiatown police crack the whip

The station made 47 arrests in just one week ranging from murder to dealing in drugs.

Following months of unease and tension as Sophiatown police continue to battle criminal activity in the precinct, proof that they are tackling the issues plaguing the community is evident.

In one week alone this month, a total of 47 arrests were made.

“The arrests range from murder (2), assault GBH, possession of drugs (13), domestic violence, undocumented immigrants, violation of protection orders, shoplifting, theft, housebreaking and theft, dealing in drugs, possession of an unlicensed firearm, fraud, business burglary, dealing in liquor, robbery, and armed robbery.

Sophiatown police spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said, “All suspects have either already appeared in court or will appear in court soon.”

Station Commander Brigadier Alfred Ndebele has committed himself and the station to continuing to take a firm hand against crime and gang-related violence.
