Opening a false case with the police can lead to imprisonment or a hefty fine
Perjury is the crime of intentionally lying under oath and is something courts take very seriously.
Linden police have warned residents not to open false cases, of any kind, as it is against the law and can result in a conviction of perjury.
Linden Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Takalani Sibiya said, “Perjury is an offence whereby someone intentionally tells an untruth or misrepresents themselves under oath. All police statements and the opening of cases are done under oath and lying when doing so is a crime.”
She explains that perjury is taken very seriously. It can result in an arrest, conviction in the courts and either a hefty fine or imprisonment.
Recently the station investigated a case where a man said his phone and laptop were stolen from his vehicle at a shopping mall. This was found to be false when detectives carried out investigations and discovered the man was claiming against his insurance despite no theft having taken place.
