Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital (RMMCH) recently unveiled its newly renovated neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), along with upgrades to wards nine and 10, all thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Jusa Trust, Total Energies, and Lubes Direct.

Matron Lesley Rose expressed how these upgrades were long awaited by the hospital, as the last renovations the NICU had was in 1990. According to the matron, the NICU faced many challenges, with it being dark and not conducive to quality patient care. In the gynaecology department, the wards had peeling paint, and floors with holes. Renovations to these wards saw vinyl removed from the walls, and new flooring installed. “The wards are brighter. There are cupboards with aesthetic. A beautiful space has been created for patients and staff,” said Rose.
These upgrades will aid the hospital’s children admitted to paediatrics and the NICU, as well as all gynaecology patients admitted, including those with cancer of the genital tract which requires surgery, women coming in with any gynae condition that requires hospitalisation, and their palliative care women.

Though the ward only received a face lift, and not new equipment, the impact this renovation has made on the lives of the hospital’s neonates is already being felt. “There has already been a reduction in the infection rate in the NICU,” said Rose.
Due to limited funding, only half of the NICU was renovated, but there is hope for the job to be finished. “We hope that, with the positive results we are noticing in the NICU, we can receive more funding for the rest of the unit.”
