Local club celebrates renowned virtuoso

Second Innings hosted a day of musical celebration for the community.

With spring in the air, communal organisation Second Innings’ month-ending event, themed Love’s Eternal Refrain, served to recognise virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman on August 31 – his 80th birthday.

Concertmaster/conductor of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Miroslav Chakaryan, who began violin lessons aged six, and made his first concert appearance aged eight, and graduated from Bulgaria’s National Music Academy, was inspired to study violin after he experienced the celebrated artistry of Perlman.

Perlman’s Cinema Serenade album with John Williams prompted Chakaryan’s rendering of Williams’ Oscar-winning score for the film Schindler’s List.

To complement the morning’s classical harmony, coloratura soprano Michelle Veenemans added her artistry to a rich repertoire of timeless classics.

She invited Emmarentia resident, Selwyn Klass, to join her in a Viennese vignette of drama and dance. Klass had previously teamed with Veenemans and her ensemble for A Klassique Experience, devised for Second Innings with pianist Tony Bentel.
