Gas leak triggers early-morning fire at Jimmy’s in Northcliff
An urgent response by SCP and Egoli Gas technicians prevented a dangerous gas leak and fire from spreading beyond the kitchen of this fast-food eatery.
A gas leak led to an early-morning fire and small explosion at Jimmy’s at Northcliff Square on February 27, blowing out the restaurant’s front windows and prompting an urgent emergency response.
Juan van der Westhuizen, operations manager at SCP, said his team received the call at 01:20 and arrived within minutes to find thick smoke and flames coming from the shop. “Fortunately, no one was inside at the time and no injuries were reported,” he confirmed.

According to Van der Westhuizen, a major gas leak inside the kitchen caused the explosion that shattered the windows. While battling the blaze, responders asked for assistance from Egoli Gas, whose technicians shut off the main valve to stop the leak and prevent further danger.

The fire was successfully contained to the kitchen, preventing it from spreading to nearby businesses. SCP teams also blocked off the entrance and parking area to protect pedestrians and vehicles from potential hazards.

“The cause of the leak is still unknown, and further investigations are underway,” said Van der Westhuizen, adding he was ‘extremely proud’ of his team’s swift action to safeguard the public and surrounding buildings.
