Guided walk reveals stories behind Westpark Cemetery

A guided walk through Westpark Cemetery helps residents better understand the historic site and encourages them to explore their family histories.

Residents had the opportunity to explore a small section of Westpark Cemetery during an informative guided walk led by heritage enthusiast Antoinette Morgan.

Morgan, who is involved with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and the Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries, hosted the walk to help visitors better understand the history and layout of one of Johannesburg’s largest cemeteries.
“I hosted a walk through a small section of Westpark Cemetery because it is such a large site,” Morgan explained. “The walk helps people understand how the cemetery works, the different types of burial areas and how to identify various burial sites.”

The experience is particularly useful for those interested in genealogy or trying to locate family members buried at the cemetery.

“These talks often attract people who are interested in cemeteries but may feel unsure about visiting on their own,” she said.
Morgan hopes the walks encourage more residents to explore the historic space.

“It’s important for people to visit,” she added. “City Parks would love nothing more than for residents to come in pairs or groups and spend time discovering the cemetery.”
