Progress seen on Hofmeyer Drive erosion site, but work still ongoing
A visit on April 1 shows the collapsed roadside has been filled in, with barricades still in place as longer-term repairs are still being completed.
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has barricaded a section of Hofmeyer Drive after erosion damaged the roadside near the corner of 5th Avenue, following concerns raised by the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA) and Ward 88 councillor Nicolene Jonker.
The damage on Hofmeyer Road, was initially marked by a deep washout that exposed underground services and ate into the edge of the road. Water from a nearby stream, which had been diverted due to a blockage, is believed to have caused the erosion.

During a visit to the site on April 1, the publication observed that the previously open trench has since been filled in. The area no longer shows the sharp drop that was seen before, and the immediate danger appears to have been reduced. However, the ground remains uneven, and the work does not yet appear to be fully completed. Yellow barricades are still in place along the roadside.

In a response, dated March 10, JRA head of department for operations Khaya Gqibitole confirmed the erosion was linked to a blockage in a nearby stream. “Overgrown trees along the stream are obstructing the natural flow of water, which has diverted water onto the roadway. The area has been secured while we prepare to address the underlying issue.”

He added that clearing the obstructing vegetation would help restore the stream’s natural flow and prevent further damage.
The publication sent a media query to JRA on April 1, requesting an update on the situation. The entity acknowledged the query, noting that a full response would be provided after April 3. We will publish the response once it is received.
