Fairland community rallies behind shelter drive as winter need deepens
The winter blanket drive highlighted the ongoing needs facing local shelters, with residents encouraged to continue donating food, clothing, bedding, and toiletries to support vulnerable individuals.
The need for donations at local shelters remains urgent, despite a successful community awareness campaign held at Cresta Crossing Centre on May 30.
Residents gathered at the shopping centre parking area to learn more about the challenges facing shelters and the people who rely on them for support. Representatives from the department of social development, Fairland SAPS, Fairland CPF, and local security companies attended the event, which also encouraged community members to become involved as volunteers.

The donation drive, however, continues beyond the awareness campaign, with shelters still requiring clothing, bedding, toiletries, and non-perishable food items.
Fairland CPF member Mandy Margolius said many people do not fully understand the realities facing shelters and the individuals they assist. She added that donated blankets and clothing are often distributed to residents during their stay, meaning shelters must constantly replenish supplies for new arrivals. Food remains another major need.
Residents who would still like to contribute can donate blankets, warm clothing, toiletries, such as soap, toothpaste, and sanitary products, as well as non-perishable food items, including canned goods, maize meal, and rice.
