Johannesburg Roads Agency extends Fairland gabions deadline again despite 94% completion

After months of delays and shifting timelines, Fairland Estate residents have been dealt another wait, as JRA extends the completion deadline for the project.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has once again moved the completion deadline for the Fairland gabions project, further testing the patience of residents who have endured months of delays and disruptions.

The latest extension comes after several missed completion dates for the infrastructure project, which was initiated to address erosion and storm water management challenges in the area.

Providing an update of the project on June 12, JRA head of infrastructure development Kwazelela Mcetywa said the work was now nearing completion, despite earlier setbacks.

“The project in Fairland experienced delays as previously indicated. However, the project is currently at 94% completion.”

Mcetywa stated that the remainder of the scope of work includes the rehabilitation of the embankment and the construction of the small channel.

He added that the revised date of the project completion is the end of June, subject to favourable conditions.

The gabions project has been the source of growing frustration among residents, many of whom have questioned the repeated delays and the impact on surrounding infrastructure and public safety.

While the JRA maintains that substantial progress has been made, residents remain cautious after previous completion dates came and went without the project being finalised.

The publication, along with Fairland Estate residents, will wait to see whether the project will finally be completed by the end of June, bringing an end to a construction period that has drawn criticism from the local community.
