Teen canoe champion targets Olympic dreams

Achieving seven gold medals at the SA Sprint Championships and Olympic dreams, Kyle Armdorf is making his mark in canoeing.

Young canoeist Kyle Armdorf is making waves on the national stage after an impressive performance at the South African Sprint Championships.
He dominated his age category, securing a place on the international circuit. The U16 paddler walked away with seven medals, winning all his events in the K1 and K2 categories over 200m, 500m, and 1 000m distances. He also stepped up to compete in the U18 division, earning a second and third place finish in K2 events. “I was nervous at first, because I knew there was strong competition, but as the day went on, I focused on my goal and what I wanted to achieve.”

This Dabulamanzi Canoe Club member is also preparing for another international event in Italy, where he hopes to gain further experience against top global competitors. Despite his success, he remains grounded. “This sport teaches you humility. You can’t go in thinking you’ll beat everyone. Anything can happen, so you have to stay focused and keep working.”

With dreams of one day becoming an Olympic champion, Kyle is determined to keep improving. His message to young athletes is simple: “Don’t give up. Stay focused, stay positive, and keep pushing. Tomorrow is another day.”
