Teen drummer finds his rhythm

James Heaney is turning passion into performance, one beat at a time.

Teen drummer James Heaney, from De La Salle Holy Cross College, isn’t just making noise; he’s creating rhythm, energy, and a whole lot of joy every time he picks up his sticks.

From a young age, James found himself drumming on just about anything within reach. It wasn’t long before that childhood habit turned into a full-blown passion. He recalled the first time he sat behind a real drum kit. “I was absolutely ecstatic.” And that feeling hasn’t faded. Inspired by his dad and driven by his own love for music, James described drumming as both powerful and calming. “It makes me feel in control. Even though it’s hectic, it helps me relax and clears my mind.”
It’s that balance between chaos and calm that defines his sound. When it comes to favourite songs, Pompeii by Bastille tops his list. It’s upbeat, meaningful, and, in his words: “Just such a fun song to play.”

Like any musician, however, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. Learning not to give up when a tricky section gets tough has been one of his biggest lessons. His solution is to reset, breathe, and simply play something he loves.

James thrives in front of an audience, with standout moments including performing at his school’s Night of the Stars, leaving him feeling proud and energised.

He looks up to drummer Chad Smith, hoping to one day match that same level of skill and stage presence. His advice to aspiring drummers? “You’ll never regret picking up a pair of drumsticks.”

Whether he’s practising with a teacher or jamming at home, one thing is clear: James is right where he belongs.
