Emmarentia Residents Association challenges residents to spruce up pavements to claim monthly prize
Better pavements, better neighbourhoods, and monthly fuel prizes are all part of a new community campaign.
In a time when every cent counts, Emmarentia residents have been given a practical reason to spruce up the pavements outside their homes and businesses.
The Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA) has launched a three-month campaign encouraging residents to improve and maintain their pavements, with a R500 fuel voucher up for grabs each month from June to August.

For ERA chairperson Saber Manjoo, the initiative is about much more than winning prizes. He believes clean, well-maintained pavements contribute significantly to the overall character of the suburb. They create a safer environment, improve the appearance of streets, and help preserve property values. “Most residents are already looking after their pavements very well. We just want to encourage everyone to do their part.”
The campaign follows a recent ERA project to repaint road names on curbs throughout Emmarentia. While the work was welcomed, Manjoo said it has been disappointing to see some of those markings becoming hidden beneath overgrown grass and vegetation. The association is also encouraging local businesses, sports clubs, and institutions to take responsibility for the spaces outside their properties. Examples of excellent pavement maintenance can already be seen throughout the suburb, and ERA hopes more organisations will follow suit.
Residents do not need to undertake major landscaping projects to qualify. The competition is open to those who have significantly improved their pavements, as well as those who consistently maintain them to a high standard.

Ultimately, the campaign is a reminder that small actions can have a big impact. Whether it is trimming overgrown grass, clearing leaves, or maintaining visibility around road signs, every effort contributes to a cleaner, safer, and more attractive Emmarentia.
And for one resident each month, that effort could also mean a welcome boost at the fuel pump.
