Sophiatown Sector 4 residents unite to tackle long-standing neighbourhood challenges
From illegal dumping to hijacked buildings, residents shared the issues they say are threatening the future of their communities.
Residents from Albertkroon, Albertville, Greymont, Newlands and Sophiatown came together at the Sophiatown Community Police Forum (CPF) Sector 4 meeting on July 4 to voice concerns over crime, by-law infringements and deteriorating living conditions in their neighbourhoods.
Held at the Church of the Nazarene in Albertville, the meeting highlighted a range of issues affecting residents, including illegal taverns, drug hotspots, non-compliant spaza shops, hijacked buildings, illegal electricity connections and overcrowded properties.

One of the strongest concerns came from Albertville residents, who described the deterioration of a local park where people are reportedly living, lighting fires in the early hours of the morning and creating unsafe conditions. One resident passionately asked, “What can I do to save my community?”

Residents also called for improved transparency and communication with the police, while confusion over the respective responsibilities of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) was identified as a challenge.
Concerns were also raised about difficulties contacting the Sophiatown SAPS landline.
Illegal dumping and by-law infringements emerged as recurring issues across all five communities, with residents suggesting awareness campaigns and stronger community involvement to help address them.

Meeting attendees stressed that neighbourhoods cannot rely solely on authorities. Instead, they encouraged residents to get to know their neighbours, participate in community initiatives and establish active CPF subsectors.
While Sophiatown and Albertville already have functioning subsectors, organisers said Albertkroon, Greymont and Newlands urgently need volunteers to establish similar community structures.
