Friends of Linden Library turn the page for a community treasure
With just a handful of volunteers, Friends of Linden Library is proving that community spirit can help keep libraries thriving.
What started as a small group of volunteers has grown into a passionate effort to ensure Linden Library remains a welcoming and vibrant community space for readers of all ages.
Formed just over 18 months ago, Friends of Linden Library (FOLL) was formed after senior librarian Senzo Nkwanyana encouraged residents to revive a volunteer group that had previously supported the library for many years.

Today, the group consists of about six dedicated volunteers who donate their time to raising funds, improving the library, and encouraging more people to rediscover everything it has to offer.

Chairperson Maureen Freeman said her connection to Linden Library stretches back decades. “I’ve been a member of this library since my children were little. I’ve visited other libraries, but this one has always felt like home.”
Fundraising has become one of the group’s biggest priorities.
Through community book sales, the volunteers have raised thousands of rands to purchase new books, support children’s holiday programmes, help maintain the library’s gardens, and even help preserve the book collection by supplying protective covers that’ll extend the lifespan of books.
Volunteer Alec Linde said the response from the community has been encouraging. “Our biggest achievement has definitely been the book sales.”
There, people generously donate books, and they have been amazed by the support from residents. The group hopes to expand those sales even further, although limited storage space for donated books remains one of its biggest logistical challenges.

Beyond fundraising, FOLL hopes to inspire more residents to return to the library, particularly at a time when digital technology has changed the way many people read.
Freeman believes there is still something special about holding a book in your hands, especially for children discovering the joy of reading for the first time.
The volunteers also hope to grow the library’s membership and encourage more businesses and residents to become involved. “Linden Library is a fantastic resource and an important part of our community’s history,” Freeman said.
“We’d love people to come back, share their ideas and help us continue building a library the whole community can be proud of.”
