Northcliff shoppers help Tshepo community development initiative by buying from market

Behind this Northcliff market is a community-driven effort with a purpose beyond shopping, supporting local traders and strengthening community connections.

A monthly community market in Northcliff is doing more than giving local traders a place to sell their goods; it is helping sustain the work of the Tshepo community development initiative.

Run by husband and wife Pieter and Marisa Rissel, the market has been operating for just over a year, with proceeds supporting Tshepo’s programmes while creating a welcoming space for local residents and small businesses. “It’s a small market, but it generates about R1 000 or a little more for Tshepo,” said Pieter. “We also run a WhatsApp sales group, where business subscribers donate directly to Tshepo.”

The couple’s volunteer work extends beyond Tshepo, with fundraising initiatives also benefiting community cleaners and Northcliff Primary School. “We collect funds for the Community Cleaners because they keep our area clean, for Northcliff Primary because the children are our future, and for Tshepo because of the work it does in uplifting people who have no jobs and no hope.”

For Pieter, Tshepo’s emphasis on personal responsibility and skills development is what makes the organisation worth supporting. “I know the people who come here don’t just receive help. They attend classes, learn practical skills, and equip themselves to stand on their own two feet. That’s why Tshepo’s survival is important to us.”

The market continues to bring together residents, local entrepreneurs, and supporters, while raising much-needed funds for the organisation’s ongoing work in the community.
