Police warn elderly to refrain from walking alone after shopping

Police warn elderly people to be more cautious while walking alone after doing shopping as they become easy targets.

A 54-year-old woman who was walking from the shops was robbed of her cellphone and groceries on the evening of April 19.

The woman was approached by two men and one suspect allegedly pointed a gun at her and demanded the items she was carrying. “The other suspect searched her and took the bag with groceries inside. The complainant did not see the registration number of the suspects’ vehicle but indicated it was a white Opel,” said Linden Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Takalani Sibiya.

She warned elderly people to refrain from walking alone after shopping, especially when they were carrying a large amount of money and expensive cellphones.
“Rather have somebody who will assist you or accompany you as you are an easy target for criminals.”

The police also warned motorists to be more careful when they stopped at traffic lights. This follows an incident which occurred on the corner of Judges Avenue and Beatrice Street in Windsor East.

A motorist alleged that he was driving his car when he stopped at a stop sign. While he was still stationary, he heard a woman calling him by his name and he asked if the woman knew him.
“While he was still concentrating on the lady, he heard someone opening the front passenger door of his car and when he looked he saw two men. One of them opened the rear left passenger door and they demanded money from him and threatened to kill him,” said Sibiya.

The two suspects took the motorist’s passport, his driver’s licence and R1 000 which were in the compartment of his front passenger door before fleeing.
“Always lock your doors and close the windows in places that you don’t feel safe or you don’t know. ”She urged motorists to always keep their valuables out of sight.
