Young artist Zoe Ocean sees drawing transformed into Fairland billboard

A nine-year-old's colourful depiction of friendship, play and community life has gone from a sheet of paper to a giant billboard — and she had no idea she was the winner until the unveiling.

What started as a simple drawing inspired by movie days, playground adventures and time spent with friends has become a memorable achievement for nine-year-old Zoe Ocean.
The young artist was surprised to discover that her artwork had won the Art of Living competition and was transformed into a billboard overlooking one of Fairland’s busiest roads.

Zoe had no idea she had won until she attended the unveiling, where she saw her colourful creation displayed on a massive scale. Her artwork reflects everyday childhood experiences, including friends playing, outdoor activities, a clubhouse, gym visits and family spaces. Zoe said she enjoyed choosing the small details that brought the scene to life, such as playground equipment, a sandcastle and homes.

Although she enjoys drawing from time to time, Zoe never imagined her work would be seen by thousands of motorists. She hopes her achievement encourages other children to explore their creativity.
Sales and marketing executive Stefan Fourie said children often capture honest and meaningful moments that adults may miss.

He believes Zoe’s artwork stood out because it showed community life from a child’s perspective.

The competition allowed children living in residential developments to share their experiences through art. Houss Properties CEO Vanessa Perfect said the initiative highlights the importance of creating communities where residents can enjoy meaningful experiences and opportunities. For Zoe, the billboard represents how a small idea can create a lasting impact.
