Grade Rs mark 100 days of learning in Victory Park
The first 100 days of school have flown by, and De La Salle Holy Cross College's youngest learners marked the milestone with creativity, confidence and plenty of smiles.
Grey wigs, walking sticks, pearls and plenty of laughter filled the classrooms at De La Salle Holy Cross College’s Junior School as Grade R learners marked their first 100 days of school on July 16 by stepping into the shoes of 100-year-olds.
The much-loved tradition celebrates far more than a number. It marks 100 days of learning, growing and building confidence.

Grade R teacher Chantelle Williams said the countdown begins on the very first day of school. “We tell the children about the 100th day from the moment they arrive in Grade R. It feels so far away at first, but before they know it, they’ve reached this exciting milestone while developing their counting skills and growing in so many ways,” she said.

Leading up to the celebration, learners counted each school day using 10s and units. On the big day, they dressed as centenarians, brought 100 items from home to count in groups of 10, created colourful ‘100 Days’ glasses and completed fun counting activities.

The classrooms were decorated with the theme ‘100 Days Brighter,’ while parents embraced the occasion with imaginative costumes featuring walking sticks, grey hair, spectacles and vintage accessories.
Williams said the first 100 days have been filled with remarkable growth. “The children have become more independent, confident and eager to learn. They’ve developed socially, built strong literacy and numeracy foundations and, most importantly, discovered a real love for learning through play,” she said.

One of the teacher’s favourite moments was watching the young ‘100-year-olds’ slowly shuffle around the classroom with exaggerated hunched backs and walking sticks, fully embracing their characters.
For the learners, the celebration created memories that will last well beyond Grade R. “Days like these become part of their childhood story. They celebrate how far they’ve come and remind them that learning can be joyful,” Williams said.
With their first 100 days behind them, the Grade Rs are already looking ahead to many more adventures as they prepare for the exciting journey to Grade 1.
