Sergeant marches to glory
ROOSEVELT PARK – Vanessa Sergeant follows her passion and lands on top.
Vanessa Sergeant plans to bowl towards her dreams in the sport she loves most, which is lawn bowls, of course.
The passionate bowls player will participate in the much-awaited Johannesburg Bowls Association (JBA) Masters tournament, after she recently won the JBA President’s Cup.
Originally from Botswana, she has lived in South Africa for the past 32 years and has loved every one of those years. She started bowling about seven years ago.
In that time she has spent close to every weekend at Roosevelt Park Bowling Club doing what brings joy to her soul. She said that the club is both serious and playful. “We not only work hard, we have a lot of fun here too,” said Sergeant.
The President’s Cup, had 12 men and 12 women from all over Gauteng who were chosen to compete in this major event. “Selectors chose the players they wanted to compete in the tournament,” explained Sergeant. She said that selectors would, throughout the year, attend competitions and award points to players through their special achievements.
At the cup, which spanned an entire weekend, five games were played. The winners of this tournament, one man and one woman, are then put through to play at the Masters. The tournament will take place towards the end of August.
“Bowls for me, is one of those games you just keep coming back to – if you do not do well one day, you will come back the next day with hopes to do better,” expressed Sergeant. She believes that to play this sport you must be equally passionate and dedicated. “I’ve fought for the past seven years to play in the tournament and it wasn’t easy.”
The fierce bowler, who has a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Film, a pilot’s licence and a Bachelors of Accounting. jokingly refers to herself as the jack of all trades but master of none. Though she might think that she has not mastered much, her determination and perseverance to achieve what makes her happy should inspire those who lack the motivation.
